Milford wildlife control Tip of the Month:

Rat communication via pheromones
Animal "speech" is neither as complicated nor as eloquent as ours, but that does not mean that their communications are any less effective. Animals and human beings evolved to communicate as each creature formed simple groups with its kind that amalgamated to form larger tribes or herds for survival.  It was and still is, a way to convey news, organize groups and understand each other. For most of us, producing sounds appears to be the primary mode of communication throughout the animal kingdom. However, pheromones also play an important role in this regard and are central to the lives of many animals.

What are pheromones?
Essentially, pheromones are chemical signals that have evolved for communication between members of the same species and are mostly detected by the sense of smell. The ancient Greeks knew about it, as they were aware that a secretion by a female dog in the heat attracts male dogs.  In his beekeepers' manual "The Feminine Monarchie" published in 1623, Charles Butler warned that an injured bee gives out a certain smell that drives its fellow bees to sting nearby humans, as an act of vengeance. In the modern age, we have come to understand pheromones and their role in a more comprehensive way. There are different kinds of pheromones, with each one conveying different kinds of information, from danger to sexual attraction.

Pheromones and rats
Unsurprisingly, rats rely extensively on pheromones to convey information and signal social response, instead of solely depending on unintelligible squeaks. The most common types of pheromones in rat communication are releaser, primer, and information.

Releaser pheromone
Rats use the releaser pheromones to send information to other rats notifying them that they are in their territory. They tend to release urine so that other rats can perceive the smell. They also use urine to send information to their young liters notifying them that they are ready to nurse.

Primer pheromone
Rats communicate through primer pheromones especial during the peak of fertility. It is that kind of pheromone that sends a signal of sexual behavior, and the female species usually initiate it. The females normally release scents that will attract the attention of the male species towards sexual intercourse. On the other hand, the male species will quickly accept the challenge and also secrete their pheromones which are triggered by a specific part of their brain. The male rat pheromone is actually quite potent and has been known to induce miscarriages in female rats.

Information pheromone
This is simply used to provide general information regarding an animal. The rats use this method to smell other species to find out something about them. They may use it, for instance, to determine what a fellow rat ate last night or whether one of them is healthy or sick. Think of this as a special kind of news feed for the rats!
